WHALE TAILS at the California DMV

Published by the Natural Resources Defense Fund

Californians are lucky enough to see whales off their coasts and on their highways.  Wait…what? That’s right, whale tails on our roads help protect our coasts thanks to the WHALE TAIL® License Plate.  Created 20 years ago by the California Coastal Commission, the WHALE TAIL® License Plate program gives California drivers an easy way to give back to our oceans.

The program has generated over $95 million in sales since its creation.  This money is used to fund WHALE TAIL® grants—which, in turn, fund a variety of different educational, youth, and Adopt-A-Beach® programs. The grants also fund projects to create hiking trails, restore local wildlife habitats, and, of course, save whales.

In addition, the WHALE TAIL® License Plate program directly funds beach clean ups, which have not only picked up millions of pounds of plastic but have also increased environmental education for community members through these volunteer activities.

To celebrate The WHALE TAIL® License Plate’s success over the past two decades, Heal the Bay, a Los Angeles-based environmental organization, is hosting Nothin’ But Sand Beach and Creek Cleanup on October 21st, 2017 from 10am – 12pm at Playa del Rey’s Toe’s Beach, Tower 41. It is crucial that we protect our oceans and our coasts for us and future generations to enjoy. The WHALE TAIL® License Plate program provides California drivers with a straightforward way to do it.
